This is perhaps the loveliest book I have ever read. Kevin Henkes has created a setting (a cottage named Scallop on Sanibel Island, Florida), a character (Alice Rice, almost-ten, only child, very introspective and kind), and a quest (the search for a junonia shell) that are just delightful. If you have an almost-ten year-old (or thereabout) in your life, or if you have been an almost-ten year-old girl yourself, this book is a must read!

This book will appeal to every child whose parents have told them they'd have to wait until they are older to gain certain privileges!  Rory's parents have always told her she can do things like drink coffee and wear make-up when she turns twelve.  So, Rory has been compiling a list and she is ready for her birthday...finally!  Of course, there are twists and turns and lots of lessons about growing up that are written very nicely.  Wendy Mass knows her audience and kids will love this book.

Grace is human.  Sam is human part of the time and a werewolf part of the time.  This is the beginning of their story, although they've known each other for years.  Shiver is beautifully written.  It's one that I've given to my daughters and all of my teenage nieces.  One of them sent me a thank you note saying "Thank you for this book, Aunt Katie!  I read it in one day.  My life wasn't complete until I read this book!"  It will definitely appeal to fans of the Twilight series.  The second book in the trilogy, Linger, is due out this July.

This book is really unputdownable!  I read it first ( in about a day and a half) then three of my children read it so we had a family book club for a couple of weeks where all we could do was talk about the characters from the Hunger Games.  It is set in a nation called Panem which consists of a Capitol and twelve outlying districts.  The Capitol is cruel and harsh and keeps the people in the districts in line by forcing them to each send a boy and a girl to participate in the "hunger games" once every year.  The "games", which are broadcast on live television throughout the districts, are a fight to the death contest of survival.  Sixteen year-old Katniss volunteers for the games after her younger sister is chosen.  She then finds herself one of the contenders and must make choices between survival and friendship, life and love.  It's a book that appeals to both girls and boys and even most adults.  The plot is fast-paced and you'll want the start the second in the series, Catching Fire, right away.  The third book comes out this ummer, so once you've read the first two, try to wait patiently...

I loved this book!  Calpurnia Tate is an eleven year-old girl who has three older brothers and three younger brothers, living in rural Texas in 1899.  Calpurnia loves nature and her spirit of discovery and adventure are so much fun.  In fact, the way Calpurnia discovers the wonders of nature is reminiscent of The Secret Garden, only Texas-style.  There is charm and warmth on every page.  The author is both a practicing physician and a lawyer, so you can guess that the writing is also s-m-a-r-t!

Wintergirls tells the story of Lia and Cassie, best friends struggling with issues related to eating disorders.  The book is "emotionally wrenching" and the main character's voice is very realistic.  It ends with an important message of hope for young girls and their families.

I couldn't put this book down!  It's a book that is fast paced and enjoyable to read, in addition to raising important issues about freedom and choice.  If you like it, there are two more books in this award-winning series, Gathing Blue and Messenger.
