Eliot Coleman gardens in Maine, with similar winters to our own in northern Wisconsin, and has written this very detailed handbook describing how to produce local, fresh food all year-round using organic methods and unheated greenhouses.  What I love most, however, is that Coleman is not only an innovative farmer who is concerned about using a minimal amount of fossil fuels, he is also a gifted writer and quite a clever man!
