The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh is a startlingly beautiful book of hope and second chances. It is the story of Victoria Jones.  Growing up in the foster system she finds an entry into the world of relationships through the language of flowers.  Psychically attuned to the nuances of others' emotions, she matches exact flowers to their specific wishes.

Victoria's own emotions are stunted, fearful and distrusting.  She struggles through her terrors to connect, to love, to give and to claim a life for herself amongst ones who truly love her. Diffenbaugh has created a memorable character who is fiery, complicated and resilient. The desolation and healing that Victoria experiences are palpable.  I held my breath in hopes for her.

Diffenbaugh has worked in the foster system and fostered a number of children. Her sensitivity to the situations is apparent in her compassionately drawn, nuanced portrayal of Victoria. Victoria Jones - and Grant, Hazel, Elizabeth and Renata - will nestle into your heart.  You will never simply view moss or verbena or daffodils or sweet pea again.  They exemplify the unspoken languages that bind.

Olsson speaks with the voice of a poet. This author of Astrid and Veronika tells a haunting tale about the consequences of silence. Her story happens at the intersection of the history that we cannot escape and our private lives.
